Community safety remains our utmost priority for the Six Nations Cannabis Commission. We are in the process of reorganization, and we would like to provide an update on the status of operations at Legacy Farms.
Legacy Farms is a licensed cannabis facility with the Six Nations Cannabis Commission. The Six Nations Cannabis Commission has conducted a thorough inspection of the premises and can confirm that there are no non-band members residing on the property. The facility does not have any living quarters; however, employees who work 12-hour shifts have access to cooking and shower facilities.
There was one controlled burn of stalks in November of 2024, which was conducted in consultation with the Six Nations Fire Department, and a permit was obtained. Legacy Farms has advised that they will consider alternate solutions for disposal, such as composting organic matter.
Legacy Farms has been transparent in their operations and reports to the Commission. They are working with specialists in the field of cannabis to ensure the safety of their products and will continue to provide all reports to the Commission. We have been informed that the cultivation operation will be conducted above ground in pots, which limits chemicals leaching into the groundwater. The pesticides proposed for use are regulated by Health Canada and are less harmful than those used in vegetable plants.
The land had previously been clear-cut for farming purposes, and we are collaborating with the owner to develop a reforestation plan for the trees that were cut. The new landowner advised that tobacco was grown on the property for eight years prior, resulting in soil degradation. Rectifying this issue will require several years of dedicated effort.
Neighbors in the area have contacted the Six Nations Cannabis Commission to share their concerns. Legacy Farms has made several accommodations to address these concerns where possible. The Six Nations Cannabis Commission will continue to ensure compliance with the Six Nations Cannabis Law and community safety.
